How much does a padel court cost?

A padel court costs as much as a car. And, like cars, there are different prices, which vary based on features and configurations. Want to invest in a padel court? Here are 10 things to remember to properly evaluate a "serious" quote.

We've already seen how a padel court is built and how important it is to choose the best materials to avoid unnecessary risks over time. Today, however, we want to talk about why it's worth investing in padel and how much a court costs.

Investing in padel: cost of courts, materials, court dimensions, necessary work, permits to open outdoor and indoor courts, costs, warranties... Here's all the information for those interested in an investment that can yield, on average, over 3,000 euros per month for each court installed. But first, a few preliminary remarks are in order.

1. The Padel Market: Constant Growth

Padel is a sport that has seen exponential growth in Italy over the last three years: the number of "official" courts has grown from a few dozen to over 600, while the number of registered players has increased from around 100 to over 5,000, while the number of practitioners and amateurs who book a court every week—more difficult to monitor—exceeds tens of thousands (certainly more than the 15,000 estimated in summer 2017 - source federtennis.it).

This is because fun is guaranteed: padel is the new emerging sport, increasingly in demand—especially in large cities, such as Rome and Milan.

"The rush to find a free court is unprecedented: not even when five-a-side football first began was there such a boom. Consider that in the capital there are over 150 courts—we are at an all-time record level: in Italy, around four facilities are being opened every day, and it is impossible today to predict how far padel will go. In the spring of 2014, it was a virtually unknown sport. Now there are queues to learn to play and then have fun with friends.

This is also thanks to the popularity given by the initial push that many fans from the "Celebrity world"—including Novak Djokovic, Francesco Totti, Roberto Mancini, Paolo Bonolis, and Diego Armando Maradona—(and their following on social media) gave to this sport, playing and putting on a public show on the courts of Rome and other European capitals.

Mancini, after all, was one of the first to try his hand at this sport that no one else had ever played. He knew.

"In Bologna, at the club near the airport, they were almost padel fanatics. While I played tennis, other members would lock themselves in that transparent cage and have fun. I started too, little by little, and today I couldn't do without it," Mancini said.

Regarding the rapid spread of this sport in Italy, CONI President Giovanni Malagò said: "I feel like I'm reliving the journey of five-a-side football, which began in Rome and then exploded throughout Italy. There are sports that are about to become Olympic disciplines, like surfing, so I'm sure that padel will also have its moment of glory."

Padel is a sport that is attracting an increasingly higher percentage of female players at the national and international level than tennis, and therefore manages to ensure a greater balance on the court between men and women.

2. Is it worth building a padel court? Yes: here are the advantages of padel, numbers in hand.

1. A padel court requires about 1/3 of the space (200 m²) of a tennis court (648 m²).

2. It is a very profitable investment - in fact, it is the sport that has had the highest growth rates in terms of number of members and players in the last 5 years.

3. A padel court is relatively low cost and has a medium-long lifespan, obviously linked to the quality of the materials (about 20 years).

4. In each match, a total of 4 players compete, 2 on one side and 2 on the other, and the match lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes.

5. The average cost per game is €12 per player, excluding balls and rackets, for a total of €48 per game (90 minutes). Considering that smaller clubs organize two games every 24 hours on weekdays and five games every 24 hours on holidays, we arrive at an estimated €3,840 per month, which equates to more than €45,000 per year for each installed court.

6. To these earnings, we must also add the revenue from the club's in-house shop, which can provide clothing, balls, and rackets. On average, balls need to be changed every three games, and a regular player changes his racket every four months.

3. Padel courts for resorts, hotels, cruises, companies, and private individuals: where can a padel court be installed?

Padel isn't just an opportunity for sports clubs; it can also be an opportunity for those who offer recreational services to their customers, such as hotels, resorts, and cruise ships.

In recent years, with the spread of the internet, these businesses have had enormous difficulty finding new customers, as buyers are faced with numerous accommodation options, with increasingly competitive and similar prices. At this point, a winning strategy could be to differentiate yourself in the services you offer, being the first to offer something that others don't yet offer.

A padel court could therefore enhance the appeal of your offering compared to that of competitors, with a modest investment.

But demand is constantly growing, not only from commercial businesses: many individuals and companies are also requesting the installation of a padel court in their premises—for daily training or to expand their employees' recreation area.

4. How much space is needed to build a padel court? Less than a tennis court. Here are all the measurements.

The main measurements of a padel court are:

Length: 20 meters.

Width: 10 meters.

Height of the walls: 3/4 meters.

The free space on the playing surface must be 7 meters.

The padel court can be located either outdoors (outdoor) or indoors (covered courts).

Quality courts consist of:

1. A base (also called a slab) of the playing court that must comply with the characteristics required by the design drawn up by an engineer. This structure must not have imperfections such as depressions and/or ridges.

2. Hot-dip galvanized iron posts and netting with corrosion-resistant welds and an abrasion-resistant cover profile.

3. 12 mm tempered glass.

5. What are the padel court models? We have two: Deluxe and Panoramic.

Italian Padel offers two ready-to-install court models: Deluxe and Panoramic. They differ in features and prices.

Two sides of this model are entirely made of glass (uninterrupted by the metal frame); this allows spectators to enjoy optimal, unobstructed views of the game.

It features a designer court with a modern and attractive metal frame.

PADELBLOCK Platform

Self-supporting and self-leveling, it allows for the installation of a padel court in areas or clubs without concrete surfaces—for example, near beaches or within unused soccer fields, or in environments with architectural or environmental constraints.

Building a Padel Court: Permits and Authorizations

Given that any good builder can provide assistance with the bureaucratic aspects, the following should be considered:

To build a padel court, it's important to be aware that the construction work falls under national technical building regulations. Therefore, it's necessary to contact the local municipality's technical office to verify the need for a proper building permit, such as:

DIA, SCIA, CIL, or CILA, with the assignment of designated and qualified technicians, who must also carry out an assessment of the nature of the terrain, the presence of wind, etc.

To avoid civil or criminal liability on the part of managers and owners, it's essential to follow the correct bureaucratic construction procedure, identifying companies capable of guaranteeing products that comply with building and structural regulations with an adequate guarantee of durability, assumed at least in 15/20 years.
